2 deaths in 3 days. yup that got all of us thinking about so many things.

life is so precious. what's worst was that politically speaking, it didn't have to happen. i guess that's why even those who didn't know them personally got affected pretty badly.

the cause is really so insignificant after awhile. no one cares if they fell down unintentionally or took their life over who or what.

but do we really need such things to happen before we open our eyes?

treasure life yeah? everything's beautiful in it's time. life's hard, ain't no bed of roses, but we are all down this path together. yes, different routes, but in the same world, alright?

just know you never walk alone in this life. somewhere out there, someone is praying, someone is watching out for you, even if you know it not.

don't lose hope, no matter how bad things may appear to be, because someone out there is watching, and keeping you safe.

This post isn’t going to talk about the value of life being greater than whatever stressors capable of instigating suicide, or argue against suicide in general. Wilburs already done that. Im just going to attempt to shed some light.

I don’t know the first guy. The second guy was only an acquaintance. So logically, the news shouldn’t have affected me beyond usual. But I was. Im not too sure what it was. It might have been the tragic loss of lives, it might have been the details of the way Jonathan left, but it probably was the juxtapose of both suicides, because there was an exponential increase – or rather, decrease in mood with news of the second one.

But it was also something else. I was reminded of when I had thought about suicide. In both senses of the word. And I gained a deeper understanding of what I already knew, that when it comes to crunch time, sometimes no amount of logic or reason will “enlighten” you to the truth. Its in double inverted comers because of this logic : at ‘crunch time’, to the involved, the ‘truth’ and the ‘right thing to do’ would be what was being currently attempted. What then, is there to be enlightened about?

So steering back, as I’ve learnt before, it is not so easy to say ‘no’ when it comes down to it. Just as people last year told me countless times and I myself was acutely aware, it was stupid to be wasting my time on computer games with a promo paper just the next day. Totally ridiculous. Absolutely foolish. Yet I couldn’t control myself. So now then we ask of these people : what is it that could be so insurmountable that you’d have to contemplate suicide? Is there no other better solution? I’d answer : no, for me there is no solution other than this, I know there might be better ways of handling the situation but yet Im still doing it.

That would be the same reason you sometimes hear stories of people who seemed to be having everything – on our level ; good grades, popular, liked by teachers, attached, bright future, glowing recommendations, you know, the complete perfect picture, or on a higher level ; good careers, family, high flying professionals. You hear stories of these people committing crimes or doing drugs and you ask yourself, why? For the very same reason. It’s the explicable psyche of the human mind. Intelligible only to those on the inside and utterly inexplicable to others on the outside.

I think you might understand better once you’ve had a walk through that particular park. Even so, it has put me in a somewhat contemplative mood. A natural state of melancholy. Pensive reflection.

ps: thanks to those who were concerned about me, no Im not depressed or (gasp!) contemplating suicide. Im just thinking. It’ll take awhile to wear off.

Final(?) Destination

No. This isn't about the movie, though I must say the movie was rather gory and extremely artificially coincidental.

No. This isn't a light-hearted post, not one made for you to laugh.

And I guess you'd know what I'm going to write about next.

3 days.
2 deaths.
Both suicides.
Both 17 and 18 years old like you and I.

I guess most of you all should know the first guy. A very outstanding student from among our midst. Perhaps too outstanding, that's why he couldn't bear the stress.

The 2nd guy was my classmate for 2 years in VS. I wasn't exactly close to him. But yes, I did know him.

Why then? I guess most of us are looking for the answer to this question. Some people call them stupid. Stupid to end their lives when they could have looked for a solution to whatever problems they have. Some people feel that its a waste of youth. Some people just feel sad.

And its frightening, its creepy, even more so when we realise that they are just like you and me. Just like you and me.

I guess for 1, its stress. Stress of being pressured to do well in exams. Also, there could be strained family relations, or failing relationships.

But my take? Most of the stress would originate from school work, exam stress. Especially in JC, we have our CCAs on top of all the school work to grapple with. For some, there are even more activities. We may not have time for our hobbies even. And then, if one is not so academic proficient, it means even more work, more tuition, more studying to be done if he wants to thrive in this results-obsessed society. Add on unhappy relationships with family. Add on having no true friend to confide in. Add on other problems.. and finally, with no one to turn to, no God that he knows to turn to.. I guess that's why such tragedies happen.

Its no surprise that Singapore has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and most of them are students. Before this, I knew a friend who had a sister who committed suicide too. She was only primary 4. An outstanding student.. to the point of being a perfectionist, and I guess that sheds some light on the stress she must have been through.

And then you read about other suicides in the papers and also hear of others in your school. I remember I heard about a suicide in VS when I was in sec 1 or 2. Apparently over O'level results.

Why then? Why choose to place so much importance and emphasis on academia and exams? Or rather, why choose to be bothered so much by such stress? Whether it be from exams, school, CCA, family or even relationships? I've always had one thing to say to those lamenting to me over poor results: You can do badly in school but that doesn't mean you'll do badly in life. Different people have different talents and some are better in academics, which is no surprise. So find your talent and do well in life.

And yes, life is so much more than results on a slip of paper. Or money. Or career.

But well, the dead has passed on. They are no longer here. Death might not be their final destination, depending on what you believe in. But at least it is for this life.

But the dead's gone. And what's left is the living. And I feel that all of us, we can all help make this society, this school a better place by just showing some extra concern for that someone who seems sad today. Just a word of encouragement will do. It may bring some light to someone's day. Perhaps that guy whom you have outcasted before, invite him to join you this time. Friends.. Treasure them.

And for all of us who are feeling stressed out over results, common tests and schoolwork. You know you should not.

All in all, I"m just gonna sum up with 2 quotes of what my fren told me. And I hope you feel the same way too.

"i tell u im gg to make it my private mission to help anyone who's my fren
i wanna be there for ppl and not let this kinda stress affect them"
"suddenly im like gg to be v unaffected by wadeva results ill be gettin ths comin week"

Yes S44, lets be there for each other during stressful times. Help one another out. Work together and play together. And as long as we've tried, leave our results to The One up there and don't worry so much about them. If we do not do well, then try harder next time.

We look at young little kids, hearing them squeal and squeak about their dreams for the future. What they can do. What they want to do. What their dreams are, with the eternal optimism and hope only a kid could have.

Then we look at our fellow 18 year old peers and see the world weariness in them, hearing them talk about their fears, their worries, their insecurities, what they want to do but can't.

And we wonder as we grew up, what happened to us?

Sometimes it is good to dream of the future. To dream of futuristic flying cars. To dream of a cure for cancer. To dream what we WANT to achieve instead of dreaming what we CAN achieve.

I wouldn't mind being a kid all over again, if I could have their eternal optimism.

what we can't describe in words

We all have been on this Earth for 17 - 19 years now.

We have seen many beautiful things. We have seen many frightful things.

And we have seen many things that we fail to describe in words properly.

Share with the class what you feel is worth sharing that you cannot describe in words properly!

-Words can't describe... friendship

- Words can't describe.....the Changi Airport sunrise (or any other beautiful sunrise, for that matter)

- Words can't describe...the feeling of winning. Haha.

- Words can't describe... the feeling of performing :)

- Words can't describe... A Healthy Lifestyle (and its ambassador) =p

- Words can't describe... the feeling of letting or worries go as you take in the night breeze

- Words can't describe... the stress of VJ exams :(

- Words can't describe... accomplishment:)

- Words can't describe... the relief and freedom after the A levels! :D

lalala

aiya falling into disrepair (my life). loads of stuff slowing down. general energy lvl going down, amount of sleep going down, computer and home becoming disorganised... plus this yr is hell yr. gotta put in my 120%.

me relatives over from china. uber crowded in the house now lolz. 4 kids + 2 parents + maid + 2 3-member families from china + grandmother of us all = 14! haha me gonna ace a lvl math. then always got communication problems lolz.

got some really pretty and hot yr 1's lolz. getting depressed haha...

x-country! came in 40! so zai, think i set personal record for myself. talking bout jts at b&j, they have this thing on the menu called monster sundae. 20 scoops of ice cream, choped nuts, fudge, marshymallows and bananas. really humongous. i've only SEEN one once, wasnt allowed within 2 m of it. thing's gotta be ordered 1 day in advance tho lolz. and comes in a giant bucket that is fist-deep in melted ice cream when you're done with it. and you gotta not mind every1's saliva swashing about and the spoons that regularly strafe the bucket for ice cream. but its really a one-of-a-kind experience. take loads of pictures with it b4 eating it haha.

take care, God bless.
